Single Camera Setup
The single-camera setup, or single-camera mode of production, also known as Portable Single Camera, is a method of filmmaking and video production.
Scenes are normally filmed together usually in a linear format. For example, in a dialogue scene. However, this is more time consuming. However, allows more creative control for the director.
Advantages
- Low budget
- Lower chance of continuity
- Single camera is easier to set up
- More control over the shot
Multi-camera setup
The multiple-camera setup, multiple-camera mode of production, multi-camera or simply Multicam is a method of filmmaking and video production. Several cameras—either film or professional video cameras—are employed on the set and simultaneously record or broadcast a scene.
Multi-camera setups are usually on sets and chase or action scenes.
Advantages
- Maintaining viewers interest
- More efficient
- More coverage
Propp's narrative theory
Vladimir Propp developed a character theory for studying media texts and productions, which indicates that there were 7 broad character types
- The villain (struggles against the hero)
- The (magical) helper (helps the hero in the quest)
- The princess (person the hero marries, often sought for during the narrative)
- The false hero (perceived as good character in beginning but emerges as evil)
- The dispatcher (character who makes the lack known and sends the hero off)
- The hero [also known as victim/seeker/paladin/winner] reacts to the donor, usually marries the princess
Narrative Theories - Levi Strauss - Binary Opposition
Binary oppositions are sets of opposite values which reveal the structure of media texts. An example would be GOOD and EVIL or LIGHT vs DARK.
An common example of this would be in Star Wars, Luke Skywalker can be seen as a beacon for good and hope. Whereas his Father - Darth Vader is the pinnacle of Evil and Darkness. This is a common Archetype found within 100's of stories.
Todorov's - Binary Opposite
"Tzvetan Todorov's narrative theory suggests that all narratives follow a three part structure where they begin with equilibrium, where everything is balanced, progress as something comes along to disrupt that equilibrium, and finally reach a resolution, when equilibrium is restored."
In Toy Story, Buzz Light year causes a disruption, by being the new toy in town.
